Being locked out of your safe can be a frustrating experience, particularly if you are in urgent need of the contents. The first thing that you need to do is let the locksmith know how you got locked out in the first place. For instance, if you have forgotten the combination to the safe, the best way to gain access would be to have the safe reset with a new code. On the other hand, if you are locked out due to a broken key, damaged bolts or other mechanical problems, then the locksmith may have to use physical manipulation to gain you access. So what are some of the methods locksmiths can use to gain you access to your safe?
Bouncing the safe
Of all the safe manipulation methods, this is one of the most basic techniques that locksmiths can use to try to gain you access. It should also be noted that if this approach is successful, it would be advisable to either purchase a more secure safe or opt not to store sensitive items inside the safe. Bouncing the safe entails striking the safe while simultaneously manipulating the handle.
The principle of this technique is that the impact of the hit will jolt the internal lock components while the manipulation of the handle will enable the locksmith to open the safe. Bouncing the safe may sound easy on paper, but it does require a high level of brute force, which is why it is best left to the professionals.
Lock overriding
If you have a safe with an electronic keypad, the locksmith may opt to override the locking system. The override can be carried out in two main ways. The first method is by inputting a factory reset code, which will automatically open the safe. However, these codes are unique depending on the brand manufacturer of the safe. A locksmith would be familiar with which codes to use due to their expertise.
The second way an override can be carried out would be through turning a reset switch located at the bottom of the safe. This reset switch tends to be had to access since safes are typically bolted down to the surface. The locksmith would be able to unhinge the safe and access the reset switch for you. Take note that if you have been locked out of your safe due to a power outage or dead batteries, a lock override would not be able to work and the locksmith would have to use a different method to access it.
